A 5-year-old Mansfield boy who has spina bifida got his wish on Monday night: the chance to meet his idol Bruce Springsteen.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Massachusetts and Rhode Island fulfilled Carter Bernhard’s dream of meeting “The Boss.”
Carter’s family traveled to Boston in “rock star” style by limousine for a celebratory VIP dinner at the Hard Rock Café Boston before a meet-and-greet with the star.
After his rock-inspired dinner, Carter met with Springsteen for an hour while backstage and then enjoyed the show at the TD Garden from VIP seating.Prior to the show at the TD Garden, which was packed with 20,000 fans, Springsteen signed a guitar and played a private concert for Carter. [FYTB note: Bruce played “Waitin’ On A Sunny Day”—Carter’s favorite song—and “Tougher Than The Rest.”]
Carter as born with spina bifida and recently suffered some complications. As a result, he was forced to spend more than two months in the hospital.“Bruce Springsteen, that’s all he talks about actually. It was so overwhelming to him. He probably just couldn’t believe it,” Stephen Bernhard, Carter’s father, told FOX 25.
The Dark Passenger
I followed that dream just like those guys do up on the screen
And I drive a Challenger down Route 9 through the dead ends and all the bad scenes
When the promise was broken, I cashed in a few of my dreams
Well now I built that Challenger by myself
But I needed money and so I sold it
I lived a secret I should’a kept to myself
But I got drunk one night and I told it
All my life I fought this fight
The fight that no man can ever win
Every day it just gets harder to live
This dream I’m believing in Thunder Road, oh baby you were so right Thunder Road, there’s somethin’ dyin’ on the highway tonight

Bruce and Clarence were Scooter and the Big Man, they were black and white, they were big and small. It was still a bold move in the early ’70s, especially in some parts of the country, to have an African-American in your band, much less one you danced with, rubbed butts with and engaged in a long soulful kiss with; the country was only a few years out of the Civil Rights movement and there are stories of gigs the band didn’t get and hotels they were told they weren’t welcome in.via Backstreets.com: Rest in Peace, Big Man
Goodbye, Big Man.
